Practice these original QA questions with a timer of about 2 minutes each. They cover arithmetic, algebra, number system and modern maths, the areas that carry most marks in CAT.
Practice questions
Q1.A can finish a job in 12 days and B in 18 days. In how many days will they finish it together?+
Combined rate = 1/12 + 1/18 = 5/36 of the job per day, so time = 36/5 = 7.2 days.
Q2.A 40-litre mixture has milk and water in the ratio 3:1. How much water must be added to make the ratio 1:1?+
Milk is 30 litres and water 10 litres. For a 1:1 ratio water must also be 30, so add 20 litres.
Q3.How many three-digit numbers are divisible by 7?+
The first is 105 (7 x 15) and the last is 994 (7 x 142), so the count is 142 - 15 + 1 = 128.
Q4.If x + 1/x = 5, find x squared + 1/(x squared).+
(x + 1/x)^2 = 25 gives x^2 + 1/x^2 = 23.
Q5.Two dice are thrown. What is the probability that the sum is 8?+
Five favourable outcomes out of 36.
Q6.A shopkeeper marks an article 25% above cost price and gives a 10% discount. What is the profit percentage?+
1.25 x 0.9 = 1.125 of the cost price.
How to review your attempt
- Note the time you took for each question.
- For wrong answers, find whether the mistake was in concept, calculation or reading.
- Try a second method for each correct answer to build speed.
