What is CAT 2026?
The Common Admission Test (CAT) is India's best-known MBA entrance exam. One of the 21 IIMs conducts it every year on a rotation, and this year IIM Indore is the convener. The score is used for PGP admissions at all 21 IIMs and for MBA/PGDM programmes at more than 1,200 other B-schools.
CAT 2026 is a computer-based test with 68 questions in three sections: Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR) and Quantitative Ability (QA). The paper runs for 120 minutes, and each section has its own 40-minute timer. Over 2.5 lakh candidates take the exam every year.
The official notification came out on July 25-26, 2026 and registration closed on September 22, 2026. The admit card is due on November 4, and the exam is on Sunday, November 29, 2026, in three slots across roughly 170 cities.

General, EWS and OBC-NCL candidates need the 50% mark. If your university gives CGPA, each IIM converts it to a percentage during admission.
You can apply while in the final year of your degree. You must complete graduation with the required percentage before joining; an offer can be withdrawn if the final result falls short.
There is no upper age limit and no cap on the number of attempts.
CA, CS and ICWA holders with at least 50% (45% for SC, ST and PwD) are also eligible.
Individual IIMs may add their own criteria, such as work experience for some programmes. Check each IIM's admission notice after the result.

CAT 2026 Syllabus
Read more: CAT 2026 SyllabusIIMs do not publish a fixed syllabus for CAT; the exam tests skills. Based on recent papers, the topics below are what you can expect in each section.
Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension
24 questionsReading Comprehension usually makes up 16-18 questions through 4-5 passages. The rest are verbal ability questions.
Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning
22 questionsQuestions come in sets of 4-6 sharing one data set or scenario, so choosing which sets to attempt matters.
Quantitative Ability
22 questionsClass 10-12 level maths. About 30-40% of QA questions are TITA, and Arithmetic plus Algebra form over half the section in most years.
CAT 2026 Answer Key
Read more: CAT 2026 Answer KeyThe provisional answer key is expected in the first week of December 2026, a few days after the exam, on iimcat.ac.in along with the question papers of all three slots. Last year the key came within 4 days and the challenge window stayed open for 4 days; a similar timeline is likely. A final key follows before the result.
How to challenge the answer key
- 1Log in at iimcat.ac.in after the provisional key is published.
- 2Open the answer key challenge section.
- 3Pick the question and submit your objection with reasoning or evidence.
- 4A fee may apply per challenge and is usually not refunded if the objection is rejected.
CAT 2026 Result
Read more: CAT 2026 ResultThe CAT 2026 result is expected in the second week of January 2027 on iimcat.ac.in. For reference, the CAT 2025 result was declared on December 24, 2025 by IIM Kozhikode, about 3.5 weeks after the exam, so CAT 2026 could land anywhere between the second and fourth week of January. The scorecard shows your overall percentile and separate percentiles for VARC, DILR and QA. CAT does not give an All India Rank.
How the score is calculated
- The exam runs in three slots, so scores are normalised to account for small differences in paper difficulty.
- Raw section scores are scaled, then combined into a total scaled score.
- Your overall percentile compares your total scaled score with all candidates.
- Most IIMs also apply a minimum sectional percentile alongside the overall one.
How to download the scorecard
- 1Visit iimcat.ac.in once the result is declared.
- 2Log in with your user ID and password.
- 3Download and save the scorecard. The site is slow right after the result, so retry if needed.

CAT 2026 Preparation Tips
Read more: CAT 2026 Preparation TipsWith the exam on November 29, you are in the consolidation phase. Learning new topics matters less now than full-length mocks, spotting patterns and fixing errors.
- Read long-form articles daily (The Hindu, The Economist, HBR) to build speed on dense text.
- In RC, choose answers the passage supports; avoid options that go beyond it.
- For para jumbles, find the mandatory pairs first (pronouns, connectors, cause-effect) and eliminate options that break them.
- For para summary, pick the option that captures the main argument, not a side detail.
- Skip word lists; CAT does not test vocabulary directly.
- Practise 2-3 sets daily from 2017-2025 papers.
- In the exam, spend the first 3-5 minutes scanning all sets and commit to the two most approachable.
- Games and tournaments, arrangements and scheduling appear most often; build speed on them.
- Two sets done accurately beat three half-done sets.
- Fix basics from Class 10-12 NCERT, especially Arithmetic and Algebra.
- Practise TITA questions without options so you can reach exact answers.
- Learn standard shortcuts for Number System and Geometry.
- Use the on-screen calculator only for the final step.
- Take 10-15 full-length mocks at the time of day of your expected slot.
- Spend as long on mock analysis as on the mock; tag errors as concept, silly mistake or strategy.
- Aim for accuracy over attempts: a 70% attempt rate at 90% accuracy beats 90% attempts at 70% accuracy.
- Stop adding new topics in the last two weeks; only revise.
- Download the admit card on November 4, check every detail and visit the centre route a day early.
