PYQ means previous year questions. For CAT, the best way to use them is in two modes: as full-length mocks to build exam temperament, and topic-wise to understand how each concept is tested.
Why PYQs matter
- They show the real level of difficulty, which mock tests often exaggerate or understate.
- They reveal which topics keep coming back in each section.
- They train you to choose questions and sets under real time pressure.
Two ways to use PYQs
Attempt one year's paper in 120 minutes. Best for building stamina and strategy in the last 3 months.
Pick all questions of one topic across years and solve them together. Best in the early months to understand how a topic is tested.
Plan for using PYQs
| Phase | What to do |
|---|---|
| Months 1-2 | Topic-wise PYQs after finishing each topic |
| Months 3-4 | Sectional PYQ sets with a timer |
| Last 8 weeks | One full PYQ paper per week as a mock |
