Practice set
Five people P, Q, R, S and T sit in a row of five seats numbered 1 to 5 from left to right.
Conditions: P sits at one of the ends. Q sits immediately to the right of R. T sits in seat 3. Q does not sit at an end.
Q1.Who sits in seat 4?+
With T in seat 3, the pair R-Q cannot use seats 2-3, so it is either seats 1-2 or seats 4-5. Q is not at an end, so R-Q takes seats 1-2. Then P must take seat 5 and S takes seat 4.
Q2.Who sits between Q and S?+
The final order is R, Q, T, S, P.
Q3.In which seat does R sit?+
R sits in seat 1.
How to approach an arrangement set
- 1Draw the empty seats first and fix the facts that are certain.
- 2List the positions the pairs can take, then use the negative conditions to remove options.
- 3Write the final order once and answer every question from it.
