What is MBA?
MBA (Master of Business Administration) is a two-year postgraduate course that teaches how a business runs: money, marketing, people and operations. The first year covers all areas; in the second year you pick a specialisation.
MBA or PGDM?
Universities award an MBA degree. Autonomous institutes approved by AICTE award a PGDM diploma. For jobs, a PGDM from a reputed institute carries the same weight. IIMs now award an MBA degree for their main programme.
Who should do an MBA?
An MBA is most useful when you know why you want it: a move into management, a switch of field, or a sales, finance or consulting career. Many top institutes give weight to one or two years of work experience.
- Freshers can apply, but group discussions and interviews will test your clarity of goals.
- Working professionals often get better roles after the course.
- Fees are high at top institutes, so compare placement records and loan options first.
Popular specialisations
Finance and Marketing remain the most chosen. Business Analytics has grown fast in the last few years.
- Finance
- Marketing
- Human Resource Management
- Operations and Supply Chain
