CBI arrests NAAC inspection-committee members and KL University office-bearers in accreditation bribery case; NAAC bars university for 5 years.
On 1 February 2025, India's Central Bureau of Investigation arrested the chairman and six members of a National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) inspection committee, in a case connected to securing a favourable accreditation rating for KL University (Koneru Lakshmaiah Education Foundation), Vaddeswaram, Guntur.
The arrests reportedly included a professor from Jawaharlal Nehru University's management department who served on the inspection committee, alongside KL University office-bearers named in connection with the case by multiple news outlets, including the university's Vice-Chancellor and a campus director.
In response, NAAC debarred the implicated assessors, suspended KL University (KLEF) from applying for fresh accreditation for five years, and began reviewing hundreds of other assessments handled by the same assessor pool. By late February 2025, NAAC had reportedly removed roughly 900 assessors nationwide as part of the broader fallout, per Indian Express reporting.
Prospective students and parents should treat any 'NAAC A++' claim about KL University found elsewhere online with this context, and verify the university's current, official accreditation status directly on NAAC's own website before relying on it.
